UN forum on Integration: Building Inclusive Societies

Under the auspices of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), the Centre for Citizenship and Globalisation, Deakin Unviersity in partnership with the Ethinic Communities Council of Victoria (ECCV) will, for the first time in Australia, present a major migration and integration public forum on building inclusive societies in Melbourne in October.

The forum will be held at the Melbourne Town Hall on Friday 7 October under the theme of: "Building Inclusive Societies: Diversity, Citizenship and Social Inclusion." It draws on the ethos of the UNAOC of helping "to improve understanding and cooperative relations among nations and peoples across cultures and religions".

The forum will bring together international, federal, state and local government policy makers and service providers, NGOs, community sector agencies, and academics to explore issues around multiculturalism and how such understandings can inform policy development and program improvement. The forum breakout sessions will focus on migration and cultural diversity, education, media and youth.

The forum has attracted high calibre keynote speakers and presenters including President Jorge Sampaio (UN High Represenatative for the UNAOC, and former President of Portugal).

President Sampaio will also be joined by the Hon Nick, Kotsiras, the Hon Senator Kate Lundy and Professors Joe Camilleri, Gay Bouma, Andrew Markus and Paul Morris.

The UN Alliance IBIS forum is also supported by the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet - Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship, Australian Government Department of Immigtration and Citizenship; City of Melbourne; Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, Immigration Museum and the City of Darebin.
