Leading US recovery disaster expert to deliver opening keynote address

MEDIA RELEASE
Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government

Date: 22 April 2010

Senior recovery advisor with the U.S Chamber’s Business Civic Leadership Centre (BCLC), Daniel Alesch will discuss the critical role local government has to play in community disaster recovery when he delivers the opening keynote address at the 2010 LGMA National Congress & Business Expo in Adelaide in May.

Since 1995, Mr Alesch has been at the forefront of community disaster recovery research in the USA.  His work has focussed on reducing the impacts of extreme events on businesses and communities.

Local Government Managers Australia (LGMA) National Chief Executive, John Ravlic is honoured to have Mr Alesch as the opening keynote speaker the annual four-day event.

“All levels of government have a critical role in disaster recovery and prevention,” Mr Ravlic says.  “As the level closest to the people, communities now look to local government to help them prepare for, respond to and recover from extreme events.

“Local government must also work closely with state and federal governments to ensure their communities have the capacity and support to effectively cope with and recover from a disaster.

“Daniel Alesch is a leading U.S authority on the affects of extreme events on communities, business and recovery.  He has consulted with U.S. governments including in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita (2005).  He has developed state-based policies and delivered numerous papers in the U.S, Europe and Asia about disaster recovery.

“As the number of extreme events in Australia increases each year, the knowledge and advice Daniel can impart to the Australian local government sector so we can ensure our communities will be more resilient and sustainable, will be invaluable.”

Mr Alesch will deliver the keynote address at 10.00am on Monday 17 May.  The LGMA National Congress & Business Expo will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre from 16-19 May.
