Re-Generation major focus for local government congress in Adelaide 2010
Local Government Managers Australia (LGMA), has announced the theme for the 2010 National Congress to be held on 16-19 May 2010 in Adelaide. The Re-Generation theme will explore the issues for local government in the areas of, supporting community recovery from natural disasters and industry decline; building resilient communities; and ensuring appropriate resources to deliver local government services in an ever changing environment.
In announcing the Congress last month in Darwin, the LGMA National President Mr. Neil Hartley, said “Next Year’s congress promises to be a spectacular one, with key note speakers including Tim Costello, Chief Executive of World Vision Australia, Professor Daniel Alesch, who has worked with over two dozen communities following extreme events in the Unites States including Hurricane’s Andrew, Hugo, Katrina, and Rita; and Sophie Morell, world transplant athlete and business woman, already locked in. We are also hoping to secure a speaker from Victoria’s Bushfire Recovery and Reconstruction Authority to talk about the Black Saturday Fire Recovery – one year on, among other things”.
“In addition, the National Congress will again aim to have practitioners sharing their own experiences with their colleagues and so we are inviting Councils and individuals to put forward ideas for presentations”, Mr. Hartley added.
The call for presenters is currently open until 31 August 2009. Local Government practitioners are encouraged to send in a brief outline of the topic that they wish to present in any of the three streams of recovery, resilience and resources. Further information is available on the LGMA national website www.lgma.org.au.
“Each year it is the local government industry presenters that help make the LGMA National Congress the leading event for local government practitioners in Australia, and with our recent fires, floods, and impacts from the global financial crisis I am sure there will be some really strong presentations at our Re-Generation Congress in Adelaide 2010”, Mr. Hartley said.
