Climate futures program calls for commercial partners
Peak professional management body Local Government Managers Australia (LGMA) is inviting commercial partners to join its drive to assist councils and shires across the nation to fulfil their obligations under the Australian Government’s ‘clean energy future’ legislative reforms.
A variety of benefits will accrue to businesses that join LGMA in its Climate Futures Program; an initiative that will deliver a range of activities to build local government and community capacity to transition to low carbon futures.
Commercial partners will enjoy access to key local government decision makers around Australia, enabling their organisations both to exchange expertise with the sector and demonstrate how their products and services can assist local governments and the community to achieve their low carbon goals.
They will also benefit from extensive formal recognition of their involvement, through such vehicles as the LGMA National Congress (20–23 May 2012), LGMA’s online and offline publications and social media and 2012 Local Government Climate Week, to be held in Canberra in October.
On the broader stage, commercial partners of the LGMA Climate Futures Program will be able to leverage their involvement to enhance their standing as good corporate citizens.
“As the tier of government closest to the community, local government has a significant role to play in climate change management, including managing the impacts of the Carbon Tax when it comes into force on 1 July this year,” said LGMA National’s Chief Executive, John Ravlic.
“Some councils have already made considerable progress towards aligning their operations to a low carbon future, but such activity very much depends on the expertise and resources available.
“We know from our experience with the Cities for Climate Protection program that a significant number of councils fall short on these, and the LGMA Climate Futures Program aims to remedy this situation.
“We believe our partnership program provides an outstanding opportunity for commercial partners to contribute to this critical capacity-building activity,” Mr Ravlic continued, “and we would urge all sector suppliers to ‘seize the day’ and come on board.”
LGMA Climate Futures Program commercial partnerships are available at four levels: Platinum ($6000 plus GST), Gold ($3500 plus GST), Silver ($2500 plus GST) and Bronze ($1500 plus GST).
Alternatively, prospective partners can opt for a tailor-made package, while the naming rights for the inaugural 2012 Local Government Climate Week are also on the table. To view the Prospectus for the Climate Futures Partners Program please click here.

“Becoming a commercial partner in the LGMA Climate Futures Program is more than just financial support,” Mr Ravlic said.
“We will be encouraging our partners to become involved in key activities by contributing content, sharing knowledge and utilising ‘best practice’ expertise that can be shared with the participants and the wider sector.
Mr Ravlic concluded by saying that local government has a real role in transitioning and transforming communities and local economies towards low carbon futures.
“By joining us in the LGMA Climate Futures Program, our commercial partners can help them carry out that role with success.”
