City of Charles Sturt win 2010 LGMA Management Challenge Australasian Final

MEDIA RELEASE
Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government

Date: 14 July 2010

An all-female team from the City of Charles Sturt in South Australia has won the internationally acclaimed LGMA Management Challenge Australasian final in a fitting tribute to the 2010 Year of Women in Local Government.

The 2010 challenge attracted over 128 teams from councils in Australia and New Zealand with the winning teams from each state and New Zealand going on to compete in the Australasian final which was held in Melbourne on the 1-2 July.  The teams contested the final across a range of related organisational topics including gender diversity, skills shortages, professional capabilities, environment and human resources.

The team, named Charlotte’s Diamonds in honour of Captain Charles Sturt’s wife and daughter, the City’s corporate identity and previous challenge teams from the City of Charles Sturt said [as a team] they learned many valuable lessons as a result of participating in the management challenge.

“We learned that a good team is stronger than individuals, no matter how brilliant those individuals are,” the team said collectively.

“For our team, we feel a sense of reward in being able to share this achievement with the rest of the staff at Charles Sturt.  We were successful because people were very generous in sharing their knowledge and experiences with us, to help make us a better team.

“As a result of our experiences, we feel a lot more confident in our knowledge of the City of Charles Sturt as an organisation and local government as an industry.    Winning was merely the icing on the cake.”

The CEO of the City of Charles Sturt, Mark Withers said the Charles Sturt team is the best example of enthusiastic professional staff committed to personal development, team work and local government.

“The last couple of challenge teams at council have taken their experience and used it to implement internal projects for the organisation,” Mr Withers said.  “This is an additional benefit to the organisation that harness their learning experience in real outcomes.

With the Year of Women in Local Government providing a timely incentive for the 2010 challenge, it seemed fitting that two all-female teams placed in the top three.  Other teams to place in the final were the City of Subiaco (WA) who placed second and the all-female Scenic Rim Regional Council (QLD) team who placed third.

An influential alumni of challenge participants attended the presentation dinner including LGMA National President and General Manager of the Kingborough Council (TAS) Paul West, who presented the winning teams with their awards.

The four other teams who participated in the LGMA Management Challenge Australasian final were Tweed Shire Council (NSW), Auckland City Council (NZ), Huon Valley Council (TAS) and the City of Melbourne Team 1 (VIC).

Nominations for the 2011 LGMA Management Challenge will open later in the year.
