Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government

Promoting Best Practice and Developing Next Practice

LGMA is set to be part of an $8 million Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government, announced by the Federal Government. The Centre, which will promote best practice, innovation and professionalism in local government, is the first of its kind in Australia.

The announcement of the winning consortium was made by the Prime Minister to mayors at the second meeting of the Australian Council for Local Government (ACLG) at Parliament House on 24th June.

The Centre’s winning consortium was led by the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and includes four partners:
·         Australia and New Zealand School of Government;
·         University of Canberra;
·         Local Government Managers Australia; and
·         Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia.

The Centre will harness the longstanding networks of the existing UTS-based Centre for Local Government, the local government sector’s two leading professional institutes and a national network of universities.

The successful consortium is well positioned to contribute to national debates on current and emerging challenges facing local government. These include the impacts of the global economic recession, climate change and its consequences, management of local government infrastructure, and building and improving the capacity of local government to serve their communities.
