International Leading Practices Symposium

About

The International Leading Practices Symposium is a collaboration between Local Government Manager’s Australia (LGMA), New Zealand Society of Local Government Managers (SOLGM) and the USA International City/County Management Association (ICMA).

Objective

To promote learning among local authority managers internationally by highlightly outstanding case studies of leading practice from different countries.

History

The first international leading practices symposium was held in Syndey (2002). Subsequent events were held in Melbourne (2004) and Rotorua NZ (2006). The 2008 International Leading Practices Symposium will be held in May at Surfers Paradise, Queensland.

2008 International Leading Practices Symposium Review

Following the congress and in partnership with SOLGM and ICMA, LGMA hosted the fourth International Leading Practices Symposium at the Crowne Plaza, Surfers Paradise from 29-30 May, 2008. This was the forth symposium held in the southern hemisphere and showcased six leading case studies of best practice from Korea, Canada, United Kingdom, United States, New Zealand and Australia.

The symposium was held immediately following the 2009 LGMA National Congress & Business Expo, and attracted over 60 senior local government officials and elected representatives. It followed the three congress themes of sustainable environment, community wellbeing and executive development.

Each symposium presentation was followed by an interactive workshop that provided delegates with the opportunity to interact with presenters and each other in a unique peer-group environment. The workshops also gave delegates a better understanding of the rationale behind each case study and how they could be applied to local situations.

Delegates were also provided with comprehensive notes on how each case study was developed and implemented.
