Introduction

Best Practice to Next Practice was the theme for the 2011 LGMA National Congress and Business Expo.  The congress and business expo were held at the Cairns Convention Centre from 22 - 25 May 2011. The congress explored how local government leaders in Australia have developed innovative and cutting edge solutions to some of the sector’s most pressing issues whilst still navigating restraint in their communities.  A bulging list of keynote speakers presented their innovative case studies under three central themes:

• Attraction and retention
• Financial sustainability and infrastructure, and
• Population growth and community.
