2006 National Skills Forum
Local Government professional peak bodies: 
held a Forum in Canberra on 27th and 28th April 2006 to:
- explore and define the skills shortage issues and impact on the provision of Local Government services;
- identify and define Local Government skills shortage issues requiring national attention; and
- develop initiatives and strategies and a coordinated sector-wide action plan to address Local Government skills shortage issues.
The Local Government professional peak bodies are committed to working with their members and Australian Local Governments to ensure that Local Government services continue to meet community needs and expectations by:

Defining what Local Government stands for and promoting a sector-wide approach to presenting a positive image.
Local Government Careers
Educating, raising awareness and establishing pathways to diverse careers in Local Government.
Leadership
Building and showcasing modern Local Governments characterised by new styles of leadership that will encourage new ways of doing things through empowerment, knowledge building, work re-design and use of technology.
Employer of Choice
Transforming Local Government into an employer of choice through adoption of leading HR practices.
The Local Government professional peak bodies acknowledge the participation and valuable contribution at the Forum by:
- Minister for Local Government, Territories and Roads;
- Australian Local Government Association and State Local Government Associations;
- Representatives from DoTaRS, DEST, DEWR and DIMA;
- Representatives from the various State Government Departments responsible for Local Government;
- Local Government Unions; and
- Local Government Educators and Trainers.
