Constitutional recognition
The expert panel on constitutional recognition of local government brought down its final report in December 2011. The majority of panel members support the referendum being held in 2013. However, there are real issues around the attitudes of some state governments and the readiness of the general public to consider this issue and vote in favour of local government.
Constitutional Recognition of Local Government Public Discussion Paper
This paper aims to promote discussion on whether local government should be recognised in Australia’s Constitution. It invites public comment on the different ideas it contains for changing the Constitution.
